Get ready for a Zumba® Pool Party! Aqua Zumba® is an energizing, invigorating way to work out and get toned for summer. Aqua Zumba® combines low-impact cardio, core work into a fun dance work out. It utilizes the traditional Zumba® format while integrating aqua fitness. This class mixes it up for a safe, challenging workout that is cardio, muscle toning, and fun! The Aqua Zumba® classes are Mondays and Wednesdays beginning June 4 at the Sesquicentennial Pool, 900 Cedarwood at Stevenson Park. KACC Alvin Live Summer Concert Series

KACC Alvin presents their Live Summer Concert Series during June, July, and August! The Live Summer Concert Series will start on June 7 at 7 PM. The R&B group Mary Smith and Mystique will play in the KACC studio on the Alvin Community College campus. Their songs are a mix of old and new school tunes that include Motown and R&B classics. Smith is a lifelong singer beginning at age of 6. Growing up as the daughter of a Baptist minister gave her the opportunity to practice with the church choir regularly. She began her professional career as an opening act for Ms. Betty Wright and the Bobby “Blues” band.

On July 12 the Honky Tonk Heroes will perform followed on August 2 by Shake Russell. The KACC Alvin Live Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Alvin Community College Foundation. ACC Live has access to the 89.7 FM studio for production. The studio can seat up to 65 guests for those who want to attend a live radio performance. The proceeds from the Summer Concert Series benefit the ACC Broadcast Communications Student Training and Development Scholarships.

Houstonian’s Beauty Line offered at Macy’s Pearland location

Houston makeup artist Kim Roxie was just 21 when she opened LAMIK Beauty at Sharpstown Mall in 2004. LAMIK stands for "love and makeup in kindness." Roxie concocted her own "green" formulas in her kitchen and tried them out on clients.

In 2008, she relocated to a studio at Greenbriar and Westheimer. Through the years, she has found the answer to many beauty woes, including overplucked eyebrows; her Celebrity Brow Kit ($55) is designed to solve the problem.

Soon, Roxie's LAMIK Beauty line, which includes lip glosses, foundations, makeup brushes and eye shadows, will debut at Macy's in Pearland and The cosmetics are slated to be sold in four Macy's stores in Texas, Louisiana and Georgia.

Pearland Killen’s Steakhouse Adds a Heights Location

Chef Ron Killen of the highly regarded Killen's Pearland steak and seafood house will open a second location in the Heights. Occupying the space formerly owned by Stella Sola at 1001 Studewood, the new Killen's will feature many of the menu favorites found at the original location along with some ambitious new additions.

Slated to open in six weeks the new location will give Sedona Lakes residents an inner loop destination to consider along with the original Pearland landmark.

Mason Elementary Kindergarten Graduation

Congratulations to the Kindergarten class of 2012! Kindergartners at Mason Elementary will graduate to grade one on May 29 at 6 PM.

Mason Elementary School places great value on community, learning, fun and a child centred approach. The teachers and school professionals excelled in laying the foundation of education for these bright young minds. Grade one is the beginning of a wonderful life. Superintendent of Alvin ISD Schools Shares Key Communicator Video

Dr. Fred Brent, superintendent of Alvin ISD schools presents a key communicator video to share some exciting new information for Alvin ISD.

In an effort to be transparent with district data, the Alvin Independent School District launched the electronic Performance Data Dashboard. The dashboard visually demonstrates the district’s progress in each of the six performance goals. The dashboard can be located by visiting

“One of the district’s six goals is to ensure that our communities and families are involved in the decision making process, and the new dashboard not only provides comprehensive and comparable data, but it pulls it all together in one place,” said Dr. Fred Brent, superintendent of schools.

E.C. Mason Elementary Hosts Annual Chess Tournament

Mason Elementary School hosted the event. 40 students from around the district participated and E.C. Mason's students placed in the top 5 in each division! Houston Ballet Presents Giselle, Free Performance

Houston Ballet presents the full-length classical tale of love and betrayal, Giselle on Friday, May 11th at 8 pm at Miller Outdoor Theater.

One of the most famous and widely performed works of the Romantic era, Giselle tells the story of a beautiful peasant girl deceived by Count Albrecht, her transformation into a Wili (the ghosts of women betrayed on their wedding day) and her forgiveness of her errant lover which results in his salvation.

Choreographed by Marius Petipa, after Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, staged by A-Gul Gaisina, and performed to music by Adolphe Adam, and it originally premiered in Paris on June 28, 1841. Presented with the famous duet from the lakeside scene from Swan Lake, one of the most beautiful passages in all of classical ballet, and the spectacular classical showpiece, Le Corsaire (“The Pirate”).

Discovery Green – Art Car Parade Sneak Peek

The whole family can enjoy a sneak peek of entries in the 25th Annual Orange Show Art Car Parade on Friday, May 11, 6:30 – 10 pm at Discovery Green. Enjoy live music from Houston Blues Society, foam party and art cars!

Plus, Discovery Green will show Art Car: The Movie. The film follows Rebecca Bass and her high school class as they prepare an entry for the annual event and exposes the audience to this unique art form, the camaraderie within the art community, and offers a glimpse of life “outside the box.” In creating this film, the co-directors traveled across the country and the world to speak with artists and discover what drives their visionary creations. It also explores how this art form challenges social norms through self-expression on the ultimate public canvas.

Celebrate Father’s Day with Pearland Parks and Recreation

The second annual Father’s Day Basketball Tournament will be held Sunday June 10, 2012 from 1 to 7 PM at the Recreation Center, 4141 Bailey Road. It’s a fun interactive way for fathers to spend time with their children and learn about good sportsmanship.

Kids from ages 7-14 will partner with their Dad to take on other families in a double elimination tournament.

This is a great opportunity for fathers/guardians to be active with their children in a friendly game of half court basketball and to teach children the importance of good sportsmanship. The tournament is set up on Court l with 4 brackets of 6 teams separated by age group; 7-8 years, 9-10 years, 11-12 years and 13-14 years.

Everyone receives a t-shirt commemorating the event and the top two finishers of each bracket receive a trophy! The registration deadline is Fri, May 25, 2012 and costs $15 for members and $22 for non-members. Registrationis required to participate and can be done online at

The Easter Bunny Visits Sedona Lakes

Kids in Sedona Lakes enjoyed the annual HOA Easter Egg Hunt at the signature open-air pavilion in Sedona Lakes. Face painting, creative balloons, a kid's obstacle course, an egg hunt, and a visit from the Easter Bunny rounded out the day's activities for the families in Sedona Lakes.

Manvel High’s Brains and Brawn Receive Recognition for Excellence

Adding to Manvel High School student body’s many achievements, Anthony Labbe received the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship for his strong leadership, community service, and academic achievements. As one of 1,000 Gates Millennium Scholars, Anthony will receive funds to attend any U.S. college or university of his choice!

Also distinguishing themselves were Ryan San Miguel & Zachary Bagadion, who were named to the 2012 All-State 4A Symphonic Band by the Texas Music Educators Association. They were chosen from over 60,000 students state-wide. Meanwhile, Manvel’s Future Farmers of America Floriculture and Poultry Judging team placed 3rd in their area contests, qualifying them for state competitions on May 4th & 5th.

Manvel High’s athletics programs gave it their all, too! The Girls Softball Team finished their season undefeated (16-0), earning them the title of 24-4A District Champs. They were only the 3rd MHS team ever to be undefeated in district. The Girls’ Softball team joined Manvel’s Football, Boys Basketball, and Girls Basketball teams to finish their season as District Champions.

And Taylor Romero became the first Manvel Maverick Football player to be selected by the Texas High School Coaches Association to play in the All-Star Football Game on July 31st at the Alamodome!
