Pearland ISD Community Stars

Posted on Friday, 29 April 2011
The Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theater company produced their adaptation of the musical Annie, based on the Harold Gray comic strip published in The New York Daily News in 1924. Four local children from Pearland ISD were cast and directed by Houston native Kevin Cahoon. Mackenzie Mellen, former Rogers Middle School student, played the lead role of Annie and shared the stage with her younger sister Madeline. Madeline is a third grade student at Silverlake Elementary and was cast in the role of Duffy. Audry Brown, cast in the role of July, and Tara McCally, cast in the role of Molly, are third graders at Massey Ranch Elementary.
These four Pearland ISD students had the opportunity to learn from one of Houston’s own who has experienced all aspects of performance from Broadway to the silver screen. Kevin Cahoon most recently worked with Joan Cusack and Seth Green on the set of Mars Needs Moms. He has also done The Lion King on Broadway as well as a rendition of The Foreigner opposite Matthew Broderick for which he received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Outstanding Feature Actor.
The performances of these Pearland ISD children was sunny and full of the hope of tomorrow!

Job Interview Tips for Pearland

Posted on Tuesday, 12 April 2011

The Pearland community is experiencing the fruits of Houston's strong-standing economy, and there are many job opportunities available in the area that are currently up for grabs. Whether you're looking for a promotion or interested in exploring a new field, interview skills can be key in securing that desired position.

Glassdoor.com recently released 25 interview questions asked by major employers, and the results show a shift in their interests and the types of questions they're asking. These employers aren't looking for a correct answer, but focus on the interviewee's thought process. The top five questions were:

  • “If you were shrunk to the size of a pencil and put in a blender, how would you get out?” – Asked at Goldman Sachs
  • “How many ridges [are there] around a quarter?” –Asked at Deloitte
  • “What is the philosophy of Martial Arts?” – Asked at Aflac
  • “Explain [to] me what has happened in this country during the last 10 years.” – Asked at Boston Consulting
  • “Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 how weird you are.” – Asked at Capital One

While it may be difficult to prepare answers for these curveballs, brushing up on your skills with a friend and being aware of what to expect can make the essential difference!

The Pearland Community has It!

“It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want – oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” Mark Twain was spot on in expressing how one feels as the weather turns beautifully just before the heat of summer begins. Getting the family out of the house is just the thing to do when spring time rolls around!

Here are a few ideas for Sedona Lakes residents to get out and enjoy the season:

  • An exciting lunch with an astronaut at Johnson Space Center. Lunch is catered and you will hear first hand from a real astronaut about their experiences in outer space. There are many dates and possible astronauts to meet; visit SpaceCenter.org/LunchWithAnAstronaut for more info and to make your reservation.
  • If the family is up for a small road trip, take a drive out to Hockley and experience Oil Ranch! They cater to a wide variety of interests including fishing, swimming, various sport activities and a petting zoo. They also have a dairy barn where their cow, Buttercup is milked.

These are just a few of the activities happening in and around the Pearland community, so whether it’s just you or the whole family, take the time to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and all of the activities that come with it!
